"Sigma Chi is a Lifelong Commitment, Not Just a Four Year Term."
It was in 1963 in the fall, I was attending a history class and saw a guy in the class that had the same kind of parka that I did. Being in Michigan and buying mine in Oklahoma, I thought this guy must have great taste. He came over, introduced himself as Jim Delagatti and asked if I was in a fraternity. I told him no, having pledged another fraternity and didn’t make my grades. He invited me to the house and I immediately pledged Sigma Chi.
I was on the Michigan State Wrestling Team at the time and couldn’t make work details, meetings, the whole smear. I was known as the “The Ghost Pledge.” Jim, who was my big brother, suggested it might be better for me to just wait until I-Week to come to the house - which I did. My welcoming committee was waiting for pledge #33 out of 33 men. It was at that time when I realized that I was not going to be initiated unless my memory and attitude changed drastically. I thought I was in good physical shape, but not ready for the penalties for not knowing my brothers’ names, sweethearts, addresses, etc. |
Approximately two days before I-Week was over, I was told that I didn’t make my grades. That was the only time I made an appointment to meet with a professor. He met with me, reviewed my test and test results, and determined that he had made an adding error on my total score. The correction gave me a “C” which gave the grade that I needed.
I WANTED IT!
I was initiated #7 in my pledge class and moved to the new house on Grand Avenue. It was such a wonderful experience being with a bunch of guys that had your back. Jim Delagatti and Jim Morton were great brothers who taught me a lot about getting along. They sold me on the idea that Sigma Chi is a lifelong commitment, not just a four year term.
After graduating form Michigan State, I came home to Tulsa to attend law school. I immediately affiliated with the Delta Omega Chapter at the University of Tulsa campus. They accepted me and treated me like a brother from day one.
Our Sigma Chi Alumni Association of Tulsa has been meeting weekly since the year 1913. I am a past president of the organization and attend the Friday lunches with the brothers form all over.
As I have grown and matured from my days at Gamma Psi, the ideals and goals of Sigma Chi have, and are still, important to me. Moreover, they are very compatible with my Christian values and walk as an adult. The White Cross on my ring finger denote that I am a Sigma Chi and support my Christian beliefs as well.
I AM VERY PROUD TO BE A GAMMA PSI SIG.
In hoc.
