E.B. HILL - A SPECIAL TRIBUTE
There should be a small statue commissioned of “E.B.” Over much of his adult life he forged the foundation of the Gamma Psi Chapter. He was a man of integrity; a statesman-like presence… a consummate gentleman. When around him, you were at your best. You knew what he expected of a Sig and of you as a consul. All Honor To His Name.

FOND MEMORIES AS A CONSUL AND GAMMA PSI SIG.
Our Sweethearts Mary Jane (MJ) Watkins was named the International Sweetheart of Sigma Chi. The pinning of a girlfriend as a new Sweetheart was a big deal. Every pinning meant a ceremony and a serenade on the front steps of the house. Actives gathered after dinner in blazer and tie, then sang our song in reasonable harmony. A bouquet of white roses followed. Housemother The presence of a Housemother (“Mom” Webster) produced standards of behavior to a rough crowd of undergrads. She demanded respect and got it! Dates and girlfriends were required to first meet and/or great “Mom” each time they came to the house. |
Dinner Meals
Always well attended. Mom was always escorted by a brother to her chair at the head of the table where grace was said. Any conversation Mom deemed inappropriate earned a comment. Looking back, this was a primer in helping transform some Dudes into gentlemen.
The Initiation
Solemn and moving. All parts were memorized led by Significant Sig Chuck Cioffi. Following the ceremony was a trip to Win Schuler’s Marshall, Michigan, for dinner and a tankard or two. Great brotherhood bonding experience.
Looking Back
Finally, looking in the rear view mirror, I recall most events, ceremonies and meetings, were always followed by clicking of the fingers and the words. “Glad to be a Sig.” I was and I still am!
In hoc,
