CONSUL MATT MARS '83
LIVING OUR VALUES
SIGMA CHI - A GREAT FOUNDATION FOR LIFE
by Matt Mars, ’83 When I reflect back on my time at Michigan State I truly believe that I learned more at Sigma Chi than I did at our beloved MSU. The principles and ideas of Sigma Chi are a great foundation for how we live our lives. It was an honor and privilege being Consul of Gamma Psi of Sigma Chi. I have fond memories of this great chapter and the brothers that made the best fraternity at Michigan State.

The Sigma Chi Creed expresses the beliefs and ideals of all members of Sigma Chi. It is a statement of what we believe our code of conduct should be and how we should lead our lives.
The purpose of the Creed, however, as stated by its author George Ade, is "not [to] restrain a brother from being a free agent and a lively comrade" but instead lays down some basic goals that can be attained:
The purpose of the Creed, however, as stated by its author George Ade, is "not [to] restrain a brother from being a free agent and a lively comrade" but instead lays down some basic goals that can be attained:
- Live a life of fairness, decency and good manners - What comes around goes around.
- The Spirit of Youth - Never stop learning.
- The Bond is Reciprocal - Treat others the way you would like to be treated.
- Build and Conduct Myself with Dignity and Respect to Others - Build your brand.
The Spirit of Sigma Chi as conceived by the Founders more than 140 years ago, remains visible and alive today. It is based on the belief that endearing friendships can be maintained without surrendering the principle of individuality or sacrificing one's personal judgment. In fact it is often those differences in temperaments, talents, and convictions that serve to strengthen those friendships and our brotherhood.
The Jordan Standard as declared by founding member Isaac M. Jordan, is the general standard for which we judge whether a man is worthy of entrance into our brotherhood. These traits about character, ambition, honor, and personal responsibility, are what I have sought to model my life after.
Thank You to all my brothers who shaped me into the person I am today.
In Hoc,
Matthew Mars Gamma Psi of Sigma Chi Consul 1983
