LIVING OUR VALUES
THE BIG HOUSE

Many people would say their college years were the best years of their lives. I agree, and the best parts of my college years were spent in a big house on Grand River. I initially rushed because the best intramural sports were in the Greek system. I was excited to meet a bunch of guys who shared my enthusiasm. I only rushed one house but I knew I would be happy around the guys I met at Sigma Chi. I have great memories of playing football, softball, hockey, broom ball and bowling with my brothers. I even did a little “coaching” of the basketball team.

While being a pledge was challenging, it was a shared experience with some great guys. And who doesn’t love a challenge anyway. With some teamwork, help and advice from our big brothers, and keeping a low profile, we made it. Initiation week brings back some vivid memories and all of them are good.
The fraternity stands for a lot of good values. Not that we always lived up to them but they were there to remind us of how to be good people and good citizens. People of different temperaments, talents and convictions coming together in the spirit of friendship and cooperation. Our country could use a lot more of that today. I still occasionally think about Rosa and Dr. And Mrs. Hill. I hope we brought joy to their lives.

While I live in North Carolina now, I don’t get a chance to see many brothers. I’ve made a few homecomings and it was well worth the trip to see some of my old friends. I would give anything to turn back the clock and be at the Sigma Chi house with all of the brothers that I was privileged to share my most fond memories with.

I must also mention that I’m still married to Louise the KD I met on a blind date at a formal KD party. Special thanks to; Mark Stout and Brian Hoban who got me to go to rush, Roger Lajeunesse my big brother, and Mark Purcell who set me up with Louise. Until we meet again…
