CONSUL GEORGE CURIS '73
LIVING OUR VALUES
BEING A SIGMA CHI IS A LIFELONG HONOR.

America’s storyteller, Louis L’Amour was quoted as saying, “A knife is sharpened on stone, steel is tempered by fire, but men must be sharpened by men.” This certainly applied to my time as our chapter’s consul.
When I was fortunate enough to become Consul, MSU’s entire Greek System was struggling. This was at the height of the Vietnam War and fraternities were considered pro-establishment, meaning pro War. The dormitories were hanging out signs during Rush Week that said, “Go Greek, Buy a Friend.”
During this very difficult time, the true meaning of Brotherhood came through at 729 E. Grand River. To help support our very small budget, many a dinner was cottage cheese and hot dogs. Never once did a brother complain instead directing that energy into Sports or Academics. What made our house so strong was how every brother found his niche on what he could do to make Sigma Chi better. I was so lucky to have a Pro Consul and Quaestor who made me look good. Together the three of us kept the house running inside (the brothers) and outside (the Alumni) smoothly. |
What a great learning experience for me, as Consul, in dealing with Brothers of Different Temperaments, Talents and Convictions! It’s what made the White Cross great back then and it is what continues to make the White Cross great today. I believe the greatest lesson I learned as a Sigma Chi, a lesson learned from E.B. Hill, is that Sigma Chi is a lifelong Honor. It’s not just something that you observe during your college years.
Glad I’m a Sig.
