CONSUL DAN GEMEUND '85
LIVING OUR VALUES
A LEGACY CONTINUED.

My exposure to Sigma Chi began a bit earlier than for most as my father, Robert Gemuend, attended MSU and was a Sigma Chi in the late 1950’s. I can still recall the small green copy-paper “Spartan Sig” newsletter arriving at our home a few times each year with the blurry picture of 729 East Grand River on the front just below the Sigma Chi Crest. I wasn’t too sure what it was then but still appreciate seeing the Spartan Sig today.

Years later when I enrolled at MSU and decided to go through freshman “rush” my father did not push Sigma Chi. He simply said it had been a great experience for him but for me to make the decision I felt was best for me. It was therefore that much more special when I was offered and accepted a bid from Sigma Chi and was able to tell my father I had done so. Unfortunately, during my time at Michigan State my father died far too soon from cancer. One of the most poignant moments of my life was seeing how many Sigma Chi’s (actives and alumni) travelled to our small-town church and were there to say in unison: “All Honor to His Name.” Now that is what brotherhood is all about!

Regarding my time as Consul, it is a bit coincidental that the three Consuls who contributed to the previous Spartan Sig were Kerry Hunt, Tom Chandler, and Matt Mars; all of whom I was fortunate to know while at MSU. So, when I was elected Consul, I understood the precedent that had been set and the expectations that were to be met from those who came before. I guess it’s really been that way since the seven Founders started it all in 1855. And of course, it goes without saying that no Consul can do much of anything without the large team of brothers that all contribute so much to all aspects of the Chapter. I am to this day grateful for having had the chance to contribute to Sigma Chi.

I am sure I share with all of you the frustrated feelings of driving by the House in East Lansing and no longer seeing the Sigma Chi letters on its front. My son is a freshman at MSU and recently was initiated into another fraternity. But one can be optimistic that with the help of “strong arms” Gamma Psi will be recolonized, and future Sigma Chi’s will once again be able to call 729 East Grand River their home.
