CONSUL BOB MACMEEKIN '73

LIVING OUR VALUES

SIGMA CHI IS A LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MACHINE.
by Bob MacMeekin, ’73
I was honored to have been  to be our chapter’s consul. But, what made Sigma Chi great was our team (brotherhood) concept. We were driven to live independently, to be accountable for our actions, and continuously sought to improve.
Unlike living in the dorm where janitors clean up after its residents, meal planning is managed by others, and other conveniences are provided, we had the autonomy and responsibility to carry our weight. We set and managed the budget, delegated responsibilities, all without influence (essentially) from outside our walls.

It was up to us to either sink or swim, to be excellent or mediocre. This type of setting tends to attract competitive young men seeking greater responsibility and opportunity to personally grow. Rush week offered the opportunity to develop lifelong lessons in salesmanship and interpersonal relations.
Facing the inherent ups and downs of independent living generated heartfelt chats with those who would become friends for life. Together we battled in sports (with great success), pursued academic excellence, often competed for the same women, while seeking to be top dog in the competitive Greek world.
Today the Greek world is facing new challenges, often by those who do not understand the challenges and benefits, and life-long advantages, fraternity living offers. Perhaps (not sure) a factor may be that students today are less inclined to sacrifice, even a small amount, to aid a greater group mission.
I just know that I and my brothers emerged much more prepared for the world. Many have grown to be leaders in business and industry, and in their community. Best of all, our shared experiences resulted in lifelong bonds, a loyal and unbreakable, brotherhood.

I look forward to when Sigma Chi returns to campus. No doubt, we will return stronger than ever.

In Hoc, Bob MacMeekin 1973
